“별은 아주 멀리 떨어져 있다. 언덕이나 나무 위로 올라가도 전혀 가까워지지 않는다. 그리고 구름은 우리와 별 사이를 지나간다. 별은 확실히 구름 뒤에 있다. 달은 천천히 움직이며 별 앞으로 지나가지만, 나중에 보면 별이 다치지 않았음을 알 수 있다. 달은 별을 먹지 않는다. 그러므로 별들은 분명 달 뒤에 있다. 별들은 반짝인다. 그들은 기묘하고, 차가우며, 멀리 떨어져 있는 빛이다. 많기도 하다. 온 하늘에 널려 있다. 하지만 밤에만 하늘에 나타난다. 그들은 도대체 무엇일까?” 칼 세이건 <코스모스>
